Interior courtesy light

My Yaris Cross delivered and registered in Spain has a black headlining and 2 very feeble interior lights immediately above the rear view mirror. As a result there is virtually no illumination in the rear of the car when the doors are opened - at night it's impossible to see if anything is left on the rear seat. Has anyone had to overcome this problem and how did they go about it?
